Looking for something to do with the kids this Easter? Come and join us for a morning of messy fun at Dorset County Museum’s Craft Academy on Wednesday during the Easter Holidays, 10.30am – 12.30pm.

The theme for Wednesday 19 April is Dragons and Dinosaurs’. Our special St George’s Day theme event will look at how dinosaur fossils may have been misinterpreted as dragons and fabulous beasts in the past and we will Wyvernlook at the familiar traits they may have shared in folklore and art.

We’ll provide the materials and the inspiration – you’ll create a wonderful piece to take home with you. Even better, it’s absolutely FREE thanks to sponsorship from Battens Solicitors.

Each time you create a masterpiece at one of our sessions, we will stamp your Craft Academy passport. If you collect three stamps we’ll give you a special certificate.

We’ve been inspired by our current exhibition in the tea room ‘Praise O’Do’set’ – an exhibition of hand painted woodblock prints illustrating the poetry of William Barnes by artist Jennifer Martindale and children will be able to create their own pieces of art using lots of different printing methods.

We’ll provide the materials and the inspiration – you’ll create a wonderful piece to take home with you. Even better, it’s absolutely FREE thanks to sponsorship from Battens Solicitors.

Each time you create a masterpiece at one of our sessions, we will stamp your Craft Academy passport. If you collect three stamps we’ll give you a special certificate.

Taking inspiration from our current spotlight exhibition ‘Nautilus: Beautiful Survivor – 500 million years of evolutionary history’ based on the book by Wolfgang Grulke in the Victorian Hall children will have a chance to learn and create creatures that live in the sea and their environment.

Lunchtime Concert performance by Thomas Hardye Students

Thomas Hardye Music Students © Thomas Hardye 2017As part of the preparation for their A-level performance exams, sixth form students from the Thomas Hardye School will perform their recital programmes in lunchtime concerts on  Wednesday 8 February 2017 and Wednesday 22nd February 2017 at the Dorset County Museum between 1.00pm to 2.00pm.

This is an ideal opportunity for the students to road-test their performances given that the exams will take place in the Victorian Hall of the Museum. Over the years, audiences have enjoyed performances on a wide variety of instruments and in a wide variety of styles given by the very talented students of our local school.

These lunchtime concert is FREE although a donation of £3 is encouraged to cover costs.

Meet your favourite Sci-Fi and Superhero characters at the Dorset County Museum

StormtroopersIt’s nearly time for Dorchester Christmas Cracker night. The event that officially kicks off Christmas in the County town takes place this year on Thursday 8 December from 5.00pm.

This year by popular demand, everyone’s favourite Science Fiction and Fantasy Movie and TV characters will be back at Dorset County Museum. Come along to see a host of characters from the Superheroes from the Marvel Universe, Star Wars, Doctor Who and many more….

Delicious mulled wine and mince pies will be available to buy and the Tea Room will be open for tasty snacks and refreshments.  A browse in the Museum shop will reveal a wide range of gift ideas including toys, games, books and jewellery.  The current exhibition Speed to the West: A Nostalgic Journey an exhibition of 20th Century Railway Posters will be on display, with prints and railway memorabilia on sale in the shop for just a few more weeks – another fantastic opportunity to pick up a very special Christmas present.

Lunchtime Concert performance by Thomas Hardye Students

Thomas Hardye School at Dorset County MuseumThis lunchtime concert taking place on Wednesday 24th February provides the chance to listen to music makers of the future.

A-Level students from The Thomas Hardye School will be giving a FREE concert at Dorset County Museum as part of their studies – it is an opportunity for them to perform to a live audience, and for visitors to hear music from potential star performers of tomorrow.

The concert is FREE although the Museum encourages donations. It takes place on Wednesday 24th February at 1.00 pm and will last for approximately one hour.

Using the Victorian Gallery displays as inspiration, can you help us create an online collection of fabulous things?

We’ll provide the materials and the inspiration – you’ll create a wonderful piece to take home with you. Even better, it’s absolutely FREE thanks to sponsorship from Battens Solicitors.

Each time you create a masterpiece, we will stamp your Craft Academy passport. If you collect three stamps we’ll give you a special certificate. If you’re able to collect all five this year we’ll give you a prize!!

Two children admitted with each accompanying adult, suggested age range 5 – 11 years.

Dorset County Museum to host Sci-Fi characters and Father Christmas on Cracker Night

Dorchester Christmas CrackerIt’s nearly time for Cracker Night again in Dorchester. The event that officially kicks off Christmas in the County town takes place this year on Thursday 3rd December from 5.00pm.

This year by popular demand, everyone’s favourite science fiction characters will be back at Dorset County Museum. Come along to see characters from the Star Wars films and Dr Who. Bring the children to see Father Christmas in his grotto – every child will receive a bag of goodies in return for a small donation.

Pliosaur meets Darth Vader

A browse in the Museum shop will reveal a wide range of gift ideas including toys, games, books and jewellery. The current exhibition St Ives and British Modernism: the George & Ann Dannatt Collection will be on display in the exhibition gallery, and prints of some of the works will be for sale – another fantastic opportunity to pick up a very special Christmas present.

Entry to the Museum on Cracker Night is FREE and everyone is welcome. The ground floor galleries will be open on the night.

Mini Maiden Castle Free Family Activity Morning

At this fun event they will find out all about the fascinating world of archaeology, get hands on in an excavation pit and enjoy a craft session.
