Learn the art of calligraphy at the Dorset County Museum

CalligraphyThe last of this year’s adult craft workshops takes place at Dorset County Museum on Wednesday 4th December at 1.00pm to 3.30pm

This session will teach the basic skills of calligraphy and provide advice on what you need to start this fascinating and rewarding hobby.  Experienced tutor Sara Newman will talk about the history of calligraphy, show some examples of traditional quills and pens and demonstrate many of the basic techniques of the art. She will also show some examples of students’ work to illustrate the progression from beginner to expert calligrapher.

There is a maximum limit of 15 people for the event and pre-booking is essential.  The cost is £7.50 and basic materials will be supplied, although anyone who has a calligraphy set at home is encouraged to bring it in and learn how to use it.  For those nervous of using a traditional metal nib and ink, a simpler alternative is to bring along a calligraphy-tipped felt pen – a medium nib is best – to provide an easier introduction to the basic techniques which will be demonstrated on the day.

Tickets are available now from the Museum shop on 01305 756827.  These sessions tend to sell out fast so early booking is recommended.  All are welcome – especially complete beginners!
